11 Essential Whiskey Cocktails to Sample at State Fare

a whiskey cocktail is poured

Sample your favorite whiskey cocktail this weekend with State Fare’s original barrel of WhistlePig whiskey.

We are obsessed with whiskey at State Fare. We’re such big fans of the drink that we recruited Canadian rye whiskey distiller WhistlePig to craft for us a one-of-a-kind custom blend. We’re cracking open our new barrel of WhistlePig State Fare whiskey November 16th from 1 to 4. We believe that four hours of tasting whiskey and imbibing whiskey cocktails is an excellent way to spend a Saturday. If you want to try our WhistlePig blend in the form of a cocktail, we’ve got a list of classics that will surely treat you right.

Manhattan Whiskey Cocktail

Rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters combine to create the classic (and classy) whiskey cocktail.

Old-Fashioned

A sweet essential whiskey cocktail, the Old-Fashioned combines bitters, sugar, an orange slice, and an optional splash of soda.

The Whiskey Sour

Any fan of tart and sour flavors must try the whiskey sour. Whiskey mixed with tart lemon and a touch of simple syrup enhances the tart and sweet notes of whiskey. If you want even more texture, you can add an egg white to the shaker.

Irish Coffee

If you want to warm up, mix coffee with Irish whiskey, brown sugar, and a touch of whipped cream. Classic, straightforward, and perfect for winter.

Mint Julep

If you want a fresh whiskey cocktail, go for the mint julep. Fresh mint, bourbon, and some muddling, and you’ve got a breath of fresh mint flavor.

Vieux Carre

A taste of New Orleans, or the French Quarter (“Vieux Carre”) in a glass! Rye whiskey, cognac, sweet vermouth, Benedictine, and two styles of bitters create a complex but rewarding cocktail that mirrors the personality of its origin city.

Highball

A classic combination: whiskey and ginger ale. If you want a simple, refreshing whiskey cocktail, this is the way to go. Add a splash of club soda if you want to lighten it up even more.

Pickleback

One of the more modern cocktails on this list, the pickleback is a shot of Irish whiskey—most often Jameson—followed by a shot of pickle juice. It somehow works, and tastes even better when followed by beer!

Lynchburg Lemonade

If your preference is Jack Daniel’s whiskey, you should opt for the Lynchburg. It accents the whiskey with its sweet and tart citrus and lemon-lime soda.

Sazerac

This unique cocktail accents spicy rye whiskey with sugar, bitters, and absinthe. The combination will give you a kick in the pants!

Boulevardier Cocktail

For whiskey drinkers, this cocktail is the go-to before-dinner drink. The stimulating mix of bourbon, sweet vermouth, and Campari creates a deep, complex flavor.
