In August 2007, the United States Senate declared September 2007 as National Bourbon Heritage Month. The United States government recognizes bourbon as a distinct American whiskey.
“America’s Native Spirit”
Whiskey is a liquor made from fermented grain mash. The grains are aged in wood barrels that help give whiskey its flavor and color. Bourbon whiskey is sweeter than scotch whiskey. The name “bourbon” is believed to come from Bourbon Street in New Orleans or Bourbon County in Kentucky. For a whiskey to be considered Bourbon whiskey, it must be distilled in America and contain at least 51% corn. The whiskey also has to be aged in a charred, brand-new white oak barrel that has never been used. After that batch of bourbon, the barrel can only be used to age scotch.
