Why is Breakfast So Important?

Breakfast is a healthful meal to have in more ways in one.

Some people love it, some people routinely skip it, and still others save it for weekends or special occasions when they head out to a restaurant. Yep, it’s breakfast. It’s that early morning (or midafternoon, sometimes), first meal of the day. It’s the meal that “breaks your fasting,” that occurs when you don’t eat overnight. And many people still consider it “the most important meal of the day” as most of our parents and grandparents called it. But why is breakfast so important?

It Fuels Your Day

When you don’t eat over the night, you are fasting, which means that your body is using up energy from your dinner. Then your body taps into your stored energy (fat or muscle) to fuel the processes of healing and repairing that go on while you are sleep. Breakfast provides a new source of fuel for your activities once you’re up and moving. Your breakfast should account for 25-35% of your daily calorie needs, and growing kids especially need a lot of calories.

It Provides Nutrients

Common breakfast foods, such as the delicious options on our breakfast menu, are key sources of many of the important vitamins and nutrients that our bodies need. Calcium, iron, Vitamin B, and Vitamin C are all provided in a classic breakfast of cereal and orange juice. If instead you opt for bacon and eggs, you’re getting a hearty serving of protein, which is key in powering the body all day long. Fiber is another very important component of many breakfast foods from waffles and fruit to nutritious cereal topped with banana.

It Powers The Brain

Another essential part of breakfast is glucose, a building block of carbohydrates that is essential to brain function. Studies have shown that eating breakfast can positively impact memory, cognitive function, and even overall happiness and stress levels. Like every other part of your body, your brain needs fuel, especially in the morning as you start your day.

It Can Be Family Time

Breakfast is also significant in allowing time to spend with family, socialize, catch up, and plan the day. Even if you’re all going separate ways, starting the day together can improve family dynamic and cohesion. It is a great time to teach valuable habits to your kids, such as starting the day with a good breakfast.
