It would be amazing to go to New Orleans for the annual Mardi Gras celebration. There are parades, music, dancing, and most importantly, lots of food. Mardi Gras basically turns downtown New Orleans into one giant party. If you aren’t able to fly down to enjoy the festivities, don’t worry! You can enjoy a Mardi Gras party right here at State Fare! Here are some cool facts you may not know about Mardi Gras.
It’s easy to think that Mardi Gras is a weeklong celebration or a festival that takes place over several days. That’s a misconception because you’re probably thinking about Carnival. Mardi Gras is supposed to be the last Tuesday before Ash Wednesday starts the Lent season. That means that it’s a single day.
Believe it or not, Mardi Gras is a great occasion to celebrate with your family. In New Orleans, St. Charles and Napoleon Streets are lovely places to watch parades with your friends and family members. St. Charles, 3rd Street, and 4th Street are also delightful venues to visit when you have the family with you.
The colorful beads that are tossed from parade floats make for great souvenirs of your trip down to celebrate Mardi Gras. As the story goes, a man in a Santa Clause costume threw beads to the people in the crowd, and it stuck as a tradition. Before then, food, dirt, and almost anything else could be thrown out by the people riding the floats.
It’s hard to fathom, but Mardi Gras is considered a legal holiday in the state of Louisiana. This has been the case since back in 1875, when the governor at the time, Warmoth, signed the “Mardi Gras” Act.
