6 Reasons Drinking Whiskey Is Good For You

Drinking whiskey in moderation has several health benefits for your heart and mind.

We at State Fare are big fans of a good, strong whiskey. But did you know there are several ways in which whiskey benefits your health? Yes, you now have several more good reasons to indulge in your favorite glass of whiskey. Read below to discover how your favorite drink can benefit you, provided, of course, that you drink it in moderation.

Whiskey Can Help Lower Risk of Dementia

A 2003 study indicated that adults who consumed one to six alcoholic beverages a week had a significantly lower risk of dementia compared to those who completely abstained from alcohol. These moderate drinkers also fared better than study participants who had more than six drinks a week.

Whiskey is a Digestion Aid

Drinking whiskey after a large, delicious meal (at State Fare?) can help ease an upset stomach. The high proof whiskey stimulates the stomach’s enzymes, which help to break down food. This benefit makes whiskey an excellent part of your next happy hour.

Single-Malt Whiskey Contains More Ellagic Acid than Red Wine

Ellagic acid is a free-radical fighting antioxidant, which has contributed to many extolling the health benefits of red wine. But whiskey has this same benefit!

Moderate Whiskey Consumption Can Lower Risk of Stroke

A study from Harvard University reports that moderate alcohol consumption is related to a 35 to 40 percent reduction in the risk of heart disease and ischemic (clot-caused) strokes. The study also proposed that moderate drinking is good for the heart and circulatory system, and are likely helpful in protecting against type 2 diabetes and gallstones.

Moderate Drinking Benefits the Heart and Blood Vessels

Researchers in Toronto found that one alcoholic drink can calm your circulatory system. Only one drink carries this benefit, however. Two or more drinks start to stress the circulatory systems.

Whiskey Can Help Cure Your Cold

Whiskey in moderation can help dilate or widen your blood vessels. The dilation helps with common cold symptoms like congestion because it allows more movement of the mucous membrane, which flushes out an infection. This trait of whiskey is often why Hot Toddies have been used as an at-home remedy for cold and flu symptoms. A splash of whiskey can also contribute to a better night’s sleep, but of course, if you drink too much, you can wake up with a hangover. It’s all in moderation!
